On the other hand, the metadata need to come from somewhere and I don't see any other way than user-created agents that provide the Metadata because there are hundreds if not thousands of websites that can be used to provide the data. There was only HAMA available already but since I didn't use AniDB I had to create the Agent on my own. That is what I did 5 years ago when I used plex and wanted to add my Animes to it. Now, if those agents are not supported anymore or the creator doesn't care or has moved on from the project you can always take the initiative to take over the project or create it on your own if it didn't already exist.

It might be more complicated or behave a different way but for the user who has those Agents, they will not see much of a difference. Which means, that while they will break they can also be fixed. However, and I think you missed something completely, Those agents are mostly not something developed by plex themselves but by people from the community, like someone like me and my Agent for MyAnimeList. With every update and some deprecated dependencies, something will always break sooner or later. To put it simply they will eventually break
